FAQ’s for Donors
-
Yes, the North Texas TRANSportation Network is a 501(c)3 (non-profit). (Tax ID number 33-2466496)
NTTN sends out giving statements each January in compliance with IRS regulations regarding receipts for tax-deductible gifts.
-
Yes. SB14 prohibits health care providers (doctors, physician’s assistants, pharmacists, etc.) from giving gender-affirming care to trans and gender-expansive youth(17 and under). It does not prohibit patients from receiving that care outside the state, and it does not prohibit neighbors from assisting each other to travel for care.

See our application page for more information.

Parents or guardians of trans and gender-expansive youth(17 and under) and trans or gender-expansive 18-year-olds can use the flat grants of $1,000 (up to twice a year) for any cost related to out-of-state travel for the trans/gender-expansive youth or trans/gender-expansive 18-year-old’s medical care. Gas, food, hotel; medical appointments and prescriptions; income replacement, etc.
NTTN does not ask families to provide “proof” of medical care, in order to preserve medical privacy.
-
Travel grants are $1,000 each, up to two times per calendar year per trans/gender-expansive youth and per trans/gender-expansive 18-year-old.
$1,000 is not enough to cover the entire cost of, say, a round trip to Colorado with a two- or three-day stay, medical expenses, and loss of income. We hope it is a substantial help, however, and a declaration of support for families who are paying attention to their kid’s need for care.
There are about 30,000 trans minors in the state of Texas, which is about 10% of the U.S. trans minor population. Assuming that a substantial number of those kids are in and around the DFW metroplex, NTTN aims to serve as many families as we can. Thus the grants are generous, but not comprehensive.
Families of trans/gender-expansive youth(17 and under) and trans/gender-expansive 18-year-olds can also qualify for a one-time relocation grant of $3000. Once a family or 18-year-old receives a relocation grant from NTTN, they can no longer receive any other financial assistance from NTTN.
-
Any family with a trans or gender-expansive youth or 18-year-old residing in one of the 45 qualifying counties, seeking safe permanent out-of-state healthcare.
-
No. At this time, adults over 18 can still receive their gender-affirming healthcare in the state of Texas. In the event the situation changes, NTTN will re-evaluate our financial capacity to add adults to our travel and relocation grants. We know it is scary for every trans and gender-expansive person in Texas right now. There are organizations in other safe states that are helping.
-
The ACLU is suing Texas over SB14.
If a lawsuit prevails after all appeals are exhausted, making health care available for trans minors in Texas, NTTN will (a) stop receiving donations and making travel and relocation grants, and (b) hold its balance for one year.
After one year, if there is no further need for travel and relocation grants, NTTN will distribute its remaining resources to trans-affirming non-profit organizations in and around North Texas.
