FAQs for Donors

  • Yes, the North Texas TRANSportation Network is an integrated auxiliary ministry of Galileo Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which holds the 501(c)3 (non-profit) status.

Galileo Church sends out giving statements each January in compliance with IRS regulations regarding receipts for tax-deductible gifts.

  • Yes. SB14 prohibits health care providers (doctors, physician’s assistants, pharmacists, etc.) from giving gender-affirming care. It does not prohibit patients from receiving that care outside the state, and it does not prohibit neighbors from assisting each other to travel for care.

  • Parents or guardians of trans minors can use the flat grants of $1,000 (up to twice a year) for any cost related to out-of-state travel for the trans minor’s medical care. Gas, food, hotel; medical appointments and prescriptions; income replacement.

NTTN does not ask families to provide “proof” of medical care, in order to preserve medical privacy.

  • Travel grants are $1,000 each, up to two times per calendar year per trans minor.

$1,000 is not enough to cover the entire cost of, say, a round trip to Colorado with a two- or three-day stay, medical expenses, and loss of income. We hope it is a substantial help, however, and a declaration of support for families who are paying attention to their kid’s need for care.

There are about 30,000 trans minors in the state of Texas, which is about 10% of the U.S. trans minor population. Assuming that a substantial number of those kids are in and around the DFW metroplex, NTTN aims to serve as many families as we can. Thus the grants are generous, but not comprehensive; and grants are not currently available to help families relocate permanently out-of-state.

  • See our application page for more information.

  • The ACLU is suing Texas over SB14.

If a lawsuit prevails after all appeals are exhausted, making health care available for trans minors in Texas, the NTTN’s Steering Committee, under the management of Galileo Church’s Missional Logistics Team, will (a) stop receiving donations and making travel grants, and (b) hold its balance for one year.

After one year, if there is no further need for travel grants, NTTN will distribute its remaining resources to trans-affirming non-profit organizations in North Texas.
